Nurturing Children
& Youth
Being involved in Girl
Scouts is a family tradition for Rekia Wickliffe. She is a fourth generation
scout and plans on passing the traditions on when she has children.
Rekia started in the Girl
Scouts of Central Kansas as a Daisy and is now a Senior Girl Scout.
This means that she started in Kindergarten and is currently a Senior in high
school. She enjoyed taking part in lock-ins and camp through the years.
She now helps with the events by preparing the food for the younger girls.
Rekia became a staff person three or four years ago and discovered her talent
of cooking for others. Because of her fondness for cooking she is looking
into going to culinary school after graduating from high school.
Rekia also follows in
her mom's footsteps by being a top cookie seller and just recently broke
her mom's record. Rekia's mom, Tracy Wickliffe, has stayed involved
in Girl Scouts as Rekia's Troop leader. Rekia has enjoyed being a Girl
Scout and has alway thought it was fun for her mom to be her troop leader.
Rekia feels that
Girl Scouts teaches independence and acceptance of people from other cultures.
She also thinks that the programs help girls gain self-esteem.
| Rekia feels
that she learned patience by filling out the forms necessary to be awarded
the Golden Award. The Golden Award is the top award that a Girl Scout
can earn and it is based on documented community service. |
