Nurturing Children & Youth

Did you know that children who have relationships with many caring adults are less likely to engage in negative behaviors and are more likely to stay in school?  This is precisely why Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina has partnered with Salina Area Schools to develop School-Based Mentoring.
Spending just 60 minutes a week in a one-to-one mentoring relationship builds a child's self-esteem, enhances self-confidence and encourages good decision making.
Chaid Schwarz is a Big Brother and a Senior at Southeast of Saline.  He thinks that being a mentor is fun and that it is good to see the changes and the impact it has on the Little.  He thinks that the personal benefits are that you can talk to all kids, not just the ones in the program and he likes being able to see what its like being a kid again.
He feels that the program benefits the atmosphere and attitude at the school.  "(It) brings us all together and helps us relate to each other," said Chaid.
Joel Platter is a 5th grader at Southeast of Saline and Chaid's little brother.  Chaid usually helps Joel with his math or plays with him at recess.  Joel said that the best part of having a Big Brother is doing stuff together.
