We All Want Safe Kids

A.V. Plank is a DARE officer for the Salina Police Department and a member of the Safe Kids committee.  All aspects of his job and volunteer work revolve around keeping children safe.
              A. V. stated that some of the ways that parents and neighbors can keep children safe is by just being aware.  Start a Neighborhood Watch program or find other way to be more involved in your neighborhood.  If you see children playing in the street, tell them that it isn't a safe place to play and make sure they move out of harms way, said A. V.
Parents need to be involved with their children and spend time with them.  Knowing who they are with, where they are, what they are doing and when they'll be home can prevent disaster.  This information can also give parents and authorities a place and time to start looking for the child if something does happen.
To keep your children safe at home it is important to teach them simple things like not playing with matches, not to touch the burner and about gun safety.  Clip stories from the paper about house fires, etc. and use those to educate.  " The most important thing is just to sit and talk with your children.  Take the time to make a connection with your child no matter where you are," said A. V.  "It is important to have more family time and less TV time."
