Nurturing Children & Youth

Gen Gillespie is an active senior at Salina South High School.  He is involved in several school activities that include basketball, baseball, National Honor Society, Renaissance, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Band and is currently the editor of the school paper.
In addition to being busy in school, Gen is also very active in the community.  His parents encouraged him to start volunteering several years ago and he found several opportunities on his own.  He started volunteering with the Volunteer Connection over two years ago.  Some of the volunteer work that he has done through the Volunteer Connection includes working with the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas, Heartland Programs and helping in the Volunteer Connection office.
Gen feels that it is important to help others and that volunteering teaches skills.  "Volunteering opens your eyes to what it takes to make a community work."
Gen encourages youth his age to get involved.  "There is always something to do."

"I think that it is important to be involved in the community," said Gen.  "In high school you should do as much as you can.  The activities in the community give you something to do and keep you out of trouble."
