Nurturing Children & Youth
David Forsberg, a fifth grader at Southeast of Saline enjoys
getting help with his social studies once a week from Big Brother Jordan
Dupes, a junior at Southeast of Saline. David and Jordan were matched
as Big Brother and Little Brother through the Big Brothers Big Sisters
School-Based Mentoring program at Southeast of Saline.
The School-Based Mentoring program was started at Southeast
of Saline four years ago with eight matches and has grown to forty.
In this program high school students are recruited to mentor elementary
students.
The Southeast of Saline program starts as a school-based match,
then after eight weeks they have the option to do activities outside of
school. The high school students spend one hour a week with their
little. Most of the matches spend time going to recess, lunch or
spending time together working on a specific
subject.
The unique situation that Southeast of Saline provides by having
high school and grade school students together in one building helps to
facilitate the program.

David and Jordan have been matched for one year and
David looks forward
to seeing Jordan every week. Jordan not only helps David with
his homework, but he has provided a special kind of friendship that has
made a difference in David’s overall outlook on life. Jordan has
been a great role model for David. |
