Nurturing Children & Youth

A room full of laughing smiling children probably aren't aware that they are learning better use of the English language and being prepared for kindergarten.  The tutoring program is made possible through Success By 6 grants from Bank of America and Salina Regional Health Foundation's Community Health Investment Program.
Volunteers at Catholic Charities offer tutoring to Hispanic children so they can improve their English language skills and prepare to enter kindergarten.
While the children are practicing their alphabet, counting the reviewing their shapes and colors, their parents are taking parenting classes in the same building from either Parents as Teacher or CAPS (Child Abuse Prevention Services).
The tutoring program is held every Tuesday and has steadily grown from three children to an average of 18 children.  Maribel Panuco, the director of the program is very pleased with the growth and said that you can already see a difference in the children.  "The children look forward to coming and are not as shy as they were when we started." said Panuco.
