Sexuality is Helping Educate Parents & Youth
Recently, Tom Klaus, researcher, teacher and adolescent-sexuality expert,
spoke at Salina area schools and at evening events for parents as part
of the “Lets Talk!” Campaign. He gives kids a strategy for choosing abstinence
and delaying their first sexual experience. “It’s easy to lower your
standards and behavior when there’s someone you really like and you really,
really want them to like you. First, know your limits of what you
would do on a date before you have to use your limits. Second, know
your different sources of pressure. Third, say “no” with your mouth,
face, and body,” Klaus explained. Studies show that teens
who have become sexually active wish they would have waited. He stressed
that everyone has the power of choice and abstinence is the best choice.
Klaus urges parents, “Know what is going on in your children's lives.
Treat them with respect so they will listen and think about what you say.
Treat them as people who can make good choices.”
The “Let’s Talk!” Campaign
promotes abstinence, encourages healthy decisions by youth, provides
resources for parents, and teaches family
communication about sexuality issues.
