Strengthening Families

You have a black eye and bruised ribs and are not looking forward to living another day with the person who did this to you.  Because you want a better life for your children, you need to leave. How do you pay for legal representaion when your spouse controls all of your assets?
This type of situation is the reason that the American Bar Association acknowledged the need for special assistance to the poor by creating a committee on legal aid in the 1920’s.  Early legal services supporters recognized that the pledge of “Equal Justice Under the Law” could not be realized as long as people with limited resources do not have access to the justice system.  Eventually, from this concern Kansas Legal Services was formed.
Kansas Legal Services represents clients in Civil cases who cannot afford to pay for legal representation.  If a client does not qualify for their services they will help them find an attorney that participates in the reduced fee program.
The Salina Area United Way helps to fund the Reduced Fee Program and the Domestic Violence Program.  “Kansas Legal Services is the only United Way agency that can protect someone’s legal rights in front of a judge.  Our participation in the United Way
helps to make the umbrella complete,” said Joe Kuhn of Kansas Legal Services’ Salina Office.

For people to achieve equality and social justice it is important for them to have equal access to the legal
system.
