Nurturing Children & Youth
Girl Scouts of Central Kansas is
a partnering agency of the Salina Area United Way and has been working
with girls in the Salina area since 1947. The Girl Scouts help youth
to realize a sense of purpose by providing informal educational, growth
and developmental opportunities to all girls ages 5 to 17.
LeAnn Plankinton, a troop leader
for girls age 12 and 13, feels that Girls Scouts provides an opportunity
for girls to build their leadership skills, life skills and to contribute
to community life.
Even though this troop has only
been active since October, they are already learning to be involved in
the community. Before Thanksgiving the girls collected over 100 cans
of food for the Food Bank.
The girls in the troop learn leadership
skills through many activities. They learn life skills by interacting
with other Girl Scouts and by taking many valuable classes.
LeAnn feels that she can already
see a difference in the way the girls interact with each other and in how
they express themselves. “They are no longer scared to speak in front
of people and to present their ideas to the group,” said LeAnn

It is hard to imagine that this close knit group of
girls were once quiet and
reserved. In a short amount of time they have grown very close
and enjoy
being a part of Girl Scouts. The girls feel that the troop
is a good experience and enjoy being more involved in the community. |
