Strengthening Families     Parents should start teaching their children about peaceful conflict resolution from the beginning.  It is important for parents to model this asset for their children.  One way that adults can show peaceful resolution is by not hitting and being respectful of others.  Parents can learn more about this important skill and many more by attending parenting classes, taking part in family mentoring or by participating in Morning Out for Moms/Dads.  These are
all programs of Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) that the Salina Area United Way helps to support.
The teachers at Morning Out for Moms/Dads work on early conflict resolution by talking to children about sharing, providing enough toys for everyone, discussing with children that they shouldn’t hit and that it hurts.  When a disagreement begins, teachers will watch to see if the children can solve it themselves and only interfere to redirect their attention if needed.
Children can be taught these skills at Morning Out for Moms/Dads, but it is important for parents to realize how much impact they have.  It is also important for parents to know that there are programs at CAPS that can help them with parenting skills or just give them a little respite  time.

Children can practice peaceful conflict resolution at an early age by learning to share and work together.
