Nurturing Children & Youth

June and Ken Jennison were concerned when they noticed young neighborhood children walking in the street in order to play at each other's homes.  The Jennison's opened up their backyard as a safe alternative route for the neighborhood children and trimmed the shrubs in the corner of their yard to make a pathway.  "They started using the path when they were young children and I just saw them taking their bikes through it the other day, even though they are in junior high school now," said June.
June stated that it is important for people in the community to mentor and remember children.  She recalled a story of a lady in Salina who had a flower garden in front of her home.  Several children had pulled out the flowers on their way to school.  The lady was waiting for them in her flower bed when they got out of school.  Ther children thought they were caught for sure, but she just stated how hard it was for her to plant the flowers.  She asked for their help and offered to pay them each a quarter for 15 minutes of their time.  The children were back the next day and the next to see what they could do to help.  Soon they were protecting 'our' flowers.
