Nurturing Children and Youth

One of the ways that Big Brothers/Big Sisters works to provide adult role models to children is through FACE to FACE, the Firefighters Advocating Character and Ethics program.
According to Scott Pilgrim of the Salina Fire department, this program brings kids to the fire department and lets them see the qualities of a respectful citizen.  They see the fire fighters working as a team and see that everyone knows their place in the team.  "They see that our job is one where everyone has to work together for life safety," said Scott.  "This is the second time that I have worked in the program and I think the kids really get a lot out of it.
In addition to seeing character and ethics being practiced, the students also work in a workbook with their mentor.  The workbook covers the six leadership traits of respectfulness, caring, leadership, responsibility, trustworthiness and citizenship.
Bryan Mendenhall has been in the program for three weeks and he stated that he really enjoys it.  "It is cool meeting the firefighters and I think that the information from the book is valuable," said Bryan.
