Salina Parks and Recreation offers a wide range of
physical activities for all ages and special populations
on an ongoing seasonal basis. Activities include
gymnastics, jump rope team, track and field clinics,
youth baseball/softball/ basketball/soccer/volleyball,
and swim, dance, golf, and tennis lessons. Contact

Salina Family YMCA, 570 YMCA Drive, 825-2151, provides
a variety of fitness and physical activity facilities to its
membership. Youth Sports include: flag football,
basketball, soccer, volleyball, t-ball, softball, baseball,
karate, weight lifting and conditioning, gymnastics, and
swimming. All children, youth and teens are welcome!
Membership is required and financial assistance available.

Salvation Army Football Program, offers a fee based, full
pad tackle program to fifth, sixth, and seventh graders.
Registration is in June with program running August and
October each year. Program is a regional six community
league including Bennington, Clifton-Clyde, Beloit,
Russell, Hays, Concordia, and Salina with a rotating
championship site. Program requirements include
personal health insurance, a medical physical, and fees
of $100 for sixth graders, $120 for seventh and eighth graders.

Salina Aquatics Club is fee based, year round Salina based
swim team. Fees include: a $40.00 monthly fee and a
$45.00 annual registration in the USA Swimming
Organization. Registration is encouraged at the beginning
of the season, but new members are accepted anytime.
Registration for new swimmers will be September 7, 2004.

Weightlifting, Reps and Sets, a non-profit, located at 703
Bishop serves ages 8 through adult, Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday, and Saturday evenings. Contact Dennis

Olympic Weightlifting Gym, a non-profit, located at 119
South 5th Street, 825-8899 serves male and female ages 11
through adults. Certified USA Weightlifting coaches
available. Gym opens Monday through Friday, 5:00 PM.

Karate: Miller’s Shotokan, 737 N. Broadway Blvd., serves
ages 7 through adult. Classes offered Monday through

Martial Arts: Salina Aikido Club, 410 W. Ash, serves all
ages. Classes offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings,

School/Community Nutrition Programs

Salina Rescue Mission, 1716 Summers Road, 823-2610,
provides free meals to anyone seven days a week, year
round. Breakfast 6:00-6:30; Lunch 12:00-12:30; Dinner and
Chapel Service 6-7 PM.

Salvation Army Community Feeding Program is offered
Monday through Friday from 5 to 5:45 PM at 1137 N. Santa
Fe and is open at no charge to anyone.

Summer Food Service Program, sponsored locally by
Heartland Programs, 309-5000, runs Monday through
Friday during June and July serving children under the age
of 18 free lunches. Serving at four community sites:
Oakdale, Cottonwood, Sunset Elementary Schools and the
Kennedy Early Education Center. The program is federally
funded through the Kansas State Department of
Education, Child Nutrition and Wellness.

Healthy Heart Program, a Salina Family YMCA and USD
305 partnership offered to selected elementary students to
improve physical fitness. Contact Amber Lippincott at

Outdoor Adventure Club (Kansas Wesleyan University and
Lakewood Discovery Center) Five experiential learning
events each semester open to the public with emphasis on
leadership and teambuilding through physical activities.
Events include hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, ropes

Kansas Kids Fitness Day is an annual statewide event
involving approximately 18,000 third graders at forty sites
across the state held annually on the first Friday in May.
The Saline County event is held at the Salina Family YMCA
soccer fields and coordinated by USD 305 Physical
Education teachers, Glynis Nixon, Oakdale School and
Debbie Christie, Sunset School. Multiple community
partners, businesses and volunteers support the event
locally.

Special Olympics is a nonprofit organization providing
local, physical activities for the disabled ages 8 through
adults. Located at 215 S. Santa Fe, Suite 101, activities
include eight weeks of rotating activities in basketball,
track and field, volleyball, bowling, golf and bocce with
area and state competitions. Volunteers are always needed.
