Issue: Chronic Disease - Obesity

What is obesity?
A person is considered obese when they have an excessive accumulation of body fat, are more that 20 percent over their ideal weight or have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater. Obesity strains the heart and can increase the chances of developing high blood pressure and diabetes. Poor diet and physical inactivity are major contributors to disabilities that result in obesity, stroke, and osteoporosis.

Why is this issue important to the community at this time?
This condition impacts all chronic diseases. Locally, statewide and nationally this condition is on the increase.

What is causing this to happen?
Sedentary life style, portion sizes, fast food, soft drink consumption, snack foods, two income households, exclusive contracts between beverage companies and schools, alternative alacarte high school meals, limited knowledge, limited time to teach nutrition, and reduced physical activity among all demographic groups.

Who is most affected by this issue?
The problem affects all ages, ethnic/racial groups, and socioeconomic brackets. It negatively impacts health care costs and economic productivity.

How is this issue being addressed in Salina and Saline County?
A Fit for Life Coalition has formed to promote healthy eating habits and increased physical activity among Saline County residents. The Alliance for Healthy Community has received a Sunflower Foundation Grant to collect school age BMI data and create a plan to reduce school age obesity prevalence.
